USPS Ground Advantage: Rates, Rules & Limits (2026)

USPS Ground Advantage is the domestic ground shipping service that replaced Parcel Select Ground in July 2023. It handles packages up to 70 pounds, delivers in 2–5 business days, and includes free tracking and $100 insurance on every shipment. Commercial rates through platforms like Shippo start around $6 for lightweight packages — less than you’d pay at a Post Office counter.

What happened to USPS Parcel Select Ground?
USPS retired Parcel Select Ground for individual shippers on July 9, 2023 as part of a broader simplification of its ground service lineup. The Postal Service folded three services into one:
- USPS First-Class Package Service — lightweight parcels under 16 ounces
- USPS Parcel Select Ground — heavier packages, ground-only
- USPS Retail Ground — packages purchased at post office counters
The combined service is USPS Ground Advantage™.
If you were using Parcel Select Ground before July 2023, you’re now using Ground Advantage. For most shippers the change was an improvement: faster delivery standards, $100 of built-in insurance, and tracking included without a separate charge.
USPS Parcel Select (without the “Ground” qualifier) still exists as a wholesale bulk service for high-volume mailers moving 50 or more pre-sorted packages at a time — a different product, not what most small businesses need. More on that below.
What is USPS Ground Advantage?
USPS Ground Advantage is the standard ground shipping service for domestic packages. It’s the default choice for e-commerce sellers and small businesses shipping within the United States, covering all 50 states, PO boxes, military addresses, and U.S. territories.
Key specs:
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Delivery time | 2–5 business days |
| Weight limit | Up to 70 pounds |
| Size limit | 130 inches combined length + girth |
| Tracking | Included |
| Insurance | $100 included; up to $5,000 purchasable |
| HAZMAT eligible | Yes (primary service for ground-only HAZMAT) |
| Available at Post Office | Yes (higher retail rates) |
| Commercial rates | Through Shippo and other shipping platforms |
Ground Advantage is the primary USPS service for hazardous materials that must travel by ground. Because it moves entirely by ground, it’s eligible for many HAZMAT items that cannot go by air. More on that in the HAZMAT section.
USPS Ground Advantage rates in 2026
Rates depend on weight and the zone between origin and destination (USPS divides the country into zones 1–9 based on distance). The table below shows commercial rates pulled from Shippo on May 21, 2026, for a Brooklyn, NY → Los Angeles, CA shipment (Zone 8, the longest domestic zone).
Commercial rates available through Shippo. Retail rates at Post Office locations are generally higher — the gap varies by weight, zone, and surcharges, and can be substantial on heavier or longer-zone shipments. Rates are inclusive of the April 2026 USPS fuel surcharge. Exact rates vary by origin ZIP, destination ZIP, package dimensions, and applicable surcharges.
| Package weight | Ground Advantage via Shippo (Zone 8) | Est. delivery |
|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | $6.24 | ~5 days |
| 1 lb | $10.01 | ~5 days |
| 2 lb | $11.67 | ~5 days |
| 5 lb | $15.05 | ~5 days |
| 10 lb | $19.78 | ~5 days |
| 20 lb | $33.44 | ~5 days |
For shorter routes, rates are lower. The same packages shipped Brooklyn, NY → Atlanta, GA (Zone 5):
| Package weight | Ground Advantage via Shippo (Zone 5) | Est. delivery |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $8.06 | ~3 days |
| 5 lb | $10.43 | ~3 days |
| 10 lb | $13.26 | ~3 days |
| 20 lb | $20.64 | ~3 days |
Rates pulled May 21, 2026. Rate shop at time of purchase — rates update with each carrier GRI cycle. Use the Shippo shipping calculator for a real-time quote.
Why commercial rates are lower than Post Office rates
Post Office retail prices start at $7.90 for small packages. Commercial rates are available through USPS’s own Click-N-Ship tool or through third-party platforms. Shippo’s rates tend to run lower than Click-N-Ship because Shippo ships at aggregate commercial volume across its entire customer base — that scale gets passed through to every shipper on the platform, regardless of how many labels you buy per month.
Weight limits and dimensions
Weight: Up to 70 pounds. Packages over 70 pounds need to go via UPS Ground, FedEx Ground, or a freight service — both ground carriers handle up to 150 pounds.
Combined length and girth: 130 inches maximum. Length is the longest dimension; girth is 2 × (width + height). A package that is 30 inches long × 20 inches wide × 15 inches tall has a combined length and girth of 30 + (2 × 35) = 100 inches — within the limit.
Minimum size: 6 inches long × 3 inches high × 0.25 inches thick.
Dimensional weight: Applies when a package exceeds 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches) and ships to Zones 5–9. The current DIM divisor is 166 — USPS bills the higher of actual weight or DIM weight. That divisor drops to 139 on July 12, 2026 (see the rate changes section).
Nonstandard fees: USPS charges $4.50–$21.00 extra for packages that are unusually long, large in volume, or awkwardly shaped. These are in addition to base postage.
What is USPS Ground Advantage Cubic pricing?
Cubic pricing calculates your rate based on package volume rather than weight. For dense packages that would otherwise carry a high per-pound charge, cubic pricing can cut costs significantly.
To qualify for Ground Advantage Cubic rates:
- Package weighs under 20 pounds
- Package measures 1 cubic foot or less (1,728 cubic inches)
- Longest dimension: 18 inches or less (expanding to 22 inches on July 12, 2026)
Direct access to cubic pricing may depend on USPS commercial eligibility or negotiated-rate requirements. Shippo’s agreement with USPS makes cubic rates available to qualifying shipments on the platform — meaning every Shippo customer gets cubic rates, starting from their first label.
When you create a label in Shippo, it automatically evaluates whether your package qualifies for cubic pricing and shows you the cubic rate alongside the standard weight-based rate. If cubic is cheaper, use it.
Can USPS Ground Advantage ship hazardous materials?
Ground Advantage is the primary USPS service for hazardous materials that must travel by ground. Some HAZMAT items may be mailable through other USPS services if they meet USPS Publication 52 requirements, but many common restricted items must use ground transportation. Items commonly shipped via Ground Advantage include:
- Lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries
- Dry ice
- Flammable consumer products (nail polish, perfumes, certain cleaning sprays)
- Other consumer commodity materials requiring surface-only transport
Requirements for HAZMAT shipments:
- Package must be properly sealed and structurally sound
- Outer packaging must be marked with the material type and “Surface Transportation Only”
- USPS Publication 52 covers the full list of permitted and prohibited items — check it before shipping anything in question
This matters for Shopify sellers, health and beauty brands, and electronics businesses. If your product contains a lithium battery or a flammable ingredient, Ground Advantage is the safest USPS option — many such items cannot go by air.
USPS Ground Advantage vs. Priority Mail
The core trade-off: Priority Mail takes 1–3 days and costs more. Ground Advantage takes 2–5 days and costs less.
| Ground Advantage | Priority Mail | |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery time | 2–5 days | 1–3 days |
| Weight limit | 70 lbs | 70 lbs |
| Included insurance | $100 | $100 |
| Tracking | Yes | Yes |
| Flat rate boxes | No | Yes |
| HAZMAT eligible | Yes, including many ground-only items | Limited; some HAZMAT permitted only under air-transport rules |
| Delivery guarantee | No | No |
Choose Ground Advantage when: customers selected standard or economy shipping, the package isn’t time-sensitive, or you’re shipping HAZMAT items.
Choose Priority Mail when: the customer paid for expedited shipping, the item has a specific delivery date (perishables, gifts), or a flat rate box makes the economics work.
A 20 lb item in a large Priority Mail Flat Rate box to Zone 8 runs about $30.95 via Shippo — versus $33.44 for Ground Advantage on the same route. For dense, heavy packages that fit in a flat rate box, Priority Mail can be cheaper at longer zones. See the full USPS flat rate box sizes and prices guide for current dimensions and rates.

What about Parcel Select for bulk mailers?
USPS Parcel Select still exists, but it’s a different product from what most small businesses need. It’s a wholesale ground service designed for large-volume mailers and fulfillment operations.
To use Parcel Select, shippers must:
- Move at least 50 packages per drop
- Pre-sort packages by destination ZIP code
- Drop parcels at specific USPS destination facilities (not at a post office counter)
- Pay postage reflecting the degree of work-sharing — the more sortation and transportation work the shipper handles, the lower the rate
The economics only work at significant scale. For a fulfillment center or 3PL consolidating hundreds of packages daily and dropping them at destination processing facilities, Parcel Select can be cost-effective. For most Shippo users — e-commerce sellers shipping 30 to 1,000 packages a month from their warehouse or home — Ground Advantage is the right service.
As of April 26, 2026, USPS raised Parcel Select base postage rates by 8%, in line with the broader 2026 rate cycle.
2026 rate changes to know
Ground Advantage has absorbed two rounds of increases in 2026 so far:
- January 18, 2026 GRI: +7.8% average across Ground Advantage
- April 26, 2026 fuel surcharge: +8% surcharge on all USPS packages, runs through January 17, 2027
Combined year-over-year increase on a typical Ground Advantage parcel: approximately 16%. The rates in the tables above already reflect both increases.
Coming July 12, 2026:
- Tier consolidation: USPS will align the 4 oz, 8 oz, 12 oz, and 15.999 oz commercial price points to the same price within each zone. The practical effect: the current price advantage at 4 oz and 8 oz goes away, raising costs for small, light packages.
- DIM divisor change: The dimensional weight divisor drops from 166 to 139 for packages larger than 1 cubic foot. This means a lightweight package in a large box that previously triggered DIM weight at 166 will now be billed at a higher calculated weight. The change aligns USPS with UPS and FedEx’s existing DIM divisor.
- Cubic length expansion: The maximum package length for cubic pricing eligibility increases from 18 inches to 22 inches, making more SKUs eligible for the cheaper cubic rate.
If you’re regularly shipping packages under 8 ounces, the July tier consolidation is worth modeling before it hits.
FAQ
What replaced USPS Parcel Select Ground?
USPS Ground Advantage replaced Parcel Select Ground on July 9, 2023. USPS combined Parcel Select Ground, First-Class Package Service, and Retail Ground into a single domestic ground service.
Is USPS Parcel Select Ground still available?
Not for individual shippers. Parcel Select Ground was retired in July 2023. A separate bulk service — USPS Parcel Select — still exists for high-volume mailers who pre-sort and drop ship 50 or more packages at USPS destination facilities, but it’s not accessible to most small businesses.
How much does USPS Ground Advantage cost in 2026?
Commercial rates through Shippo start around $6.24 for an 8-ounce package on a long-distance route. A 5 lb package coast to coast runs about $15.05. Shorter routes cost less — the same 5 lb package from New York to Atlanta runs $10.43. See the rate tables above for current examples, or use the USPS shipping calculator for a live quote.
How long does USPS Ground Advantage take?
Delivery takes 2–5 business days within the continental United States. Alaska, Hawaii, territories, and military addresses may take longer. USPS does not guarantee delivery dates on this service.
Does USPS Ground Advantage include tracking and insurance?
Yes to both. Every shipment includes USPS Tracking and $100 of insurance at no extra charge. Additional coverage up to $5,000 is available for purchase.
Can USPS Ground Advantage ship lithium batteries?
Yes — Ground Advantage is the primary USPS service for hazardous materials that must travel by ground, including lithium-ion batteries, dry ice, and certain flammable consumer products. Some HAZMAT may be permitted on other USPS services under specific Publication 52 conditions, but Ground Advantage is the standard choice for ground-only HAZMAT. Packages must be properly labeled per USPS Publication 52.
What is the difference between Parcel Select and Ground Advantage?
Parcel Select Ground (the old individual-shipper service) was rolled into Ground Advantage in July 2023. Today’s Parcel Select is a wholesale bulk service requiring pre-sorted drops of 50+ packages at USPS destination facilities — it’s not the same product as the old Parcel Select Ground.
Shippo gives every shipper access to commercial USPS rates — the same rates reflected in the tables above — across Ground Advantage and 40+ other carriers. See Shippo’s pricing to get started for free.
