What is USPS Ground Advantage?
USPS Ground Advantage is a domestic ground shipping service for packages up to 70 lbs, delivering to all 50 states in 2–5 business days with free tracking and $100 insurance included. It launched July 9, 2023, consolidating three overlapping USPS ground services—Retail Ground, Parcel Select Ground, and First-Class Package Service—into a single product. Now there's one standard ground option for domestic parcels up to 70 lbs, with consistent pricing, tracking, and insurance across the board.
USPS also kept the ounce-based pricing tiers that made First-Class Package Service the go-to for sub-16-oz parcels. If you were shipping with First-Class Package Service before July 2023, your rates didn't change much—the token changed in your API call, not your cost structure.
How much does USPS Ground Advantage cost in 2026?
Retail Ground Advantage postage starts at $7.90 for lightweight packages shipped short distances (effective April 26, 2026). Commercial rates—the discounted rates available through Shippo's USPS shipping platform—are lower and vary by weight and zone. For exact rates on your shipments, use Shippo's USPS shipping calculator.
Weight pricing structure:
For packages under one pound, USPS prices by four weight tiers. Weights round up to the next tier.
| Weight | Pricing Tier |
|---|---|
| Up to 4 oz | 4-oz rate |
| Over 4 oz, up to 8 oz | 8-oz rate |
| Over 8 oz, up to 12 oz | 12-oz rate |
| Over 12 oz, up to 15.999 oz | 15.999-oz rate |
Packages over 15.999 oz round up to 1 lb and price by the pound (rounded up to the next whole pound). Maximum billable weight is 70 lbs.
2026 rate increases: USPS implemented a 7.8% rate increase effective Jan. 18, 2026, followed by an additional 8% temporary surcharge effective April 26, 2026—running through Jan. 17, 2027. Combined, effective rates rose roughly 16% year over year. A further commercial rate restructuring takes effect July 12, 2026. See What's changing in 2026 for details.
How long does USPS Ground Advantage delivery take?
Ground Advantage delivers in 2–5 business days to addresses in the contiguous 48 states. Packages to Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands), and military addresses (APO/FPO/DPO) may require additional transit time. Hazardous material shipments and live animals can also see slower service.
The 2–5 day window is an expected delivery standard, not a guaranteed service commitment. For time-sensitive shipments with a delivery guarantee, USPS Priority Mail (1–3 business days) or Priority Mail Express (1–2 days with a money-back guarantee) are better fits.
What does USPS Ground Advantage include?
Every Ground Advantage label includes at no extra charge:
- USPS Tracking—end-to-end tracking on every shipment
- $100 insurance—covers both outbound and return packages against loss or damage
- Free Package Pickup—USPS will collect packages from your home or office
- Forwarding and return service—if a package can't be delivered, USPS handles forwarding or return without charging extra
Additional insurance coverage up to $5,000 is available for purchase if your merchandise value exceeds $100.
What are the USPS Ground Advantage size and weight limits?
Ground Advantage accepts packages meeting these requirements:
- Maximum weight: 70 lbs
- Maximum combined length and girth: 130 inches (girth = 2 × width + 2 × height)
- Own packaging required: Unlike Priority Mail, USPS does not provide free boxes for Ground Advantage shipments
Large envelopes (flats) that exceed 15 inches long, 12 inches high, or ¾ inch thick—or that are rigid or non-uniformly thick—are priced at Ground Advantage parcel rates rather than flat rates.
Dimensional weight: For packages larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), USPS calculates a dimensional (DIM) weight: Length × Width × Height ÷ 166. If the result exceeds actual weight, you pay the DIM weight rate. The divisor drops from 166 to 139 for packages over 1 cubic foot effective July 12, 2026—meaning DIM weights will increase on large packages.
What fees and surcharges apply to USPS Ground Advantage?
USPS Ground Advantage charges surcharges for oversized, irregularly shaped, or special-content packages, ranging from $4.50 to $21.00 per shipment. The most common triggers:
| Situation | Fee |
|---|---|
| Length between 22 and 30 inches | +$4.50 |
| Length over 30 inches | +$10.00 |
| Package over 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches) | +$21.00 |
| Nonstandard shape or material (tube, cylinder, wooden or metal box, polybag with shifting contents, or 24+ oz of liquid in glass/more than 1 gallon in metal or plastic containers) | +$4.50 |
| Live animals or perishable items | +$7.50 |
Note: the nonstandard length and nonstandard shape fees don't stack—you pay the higher of the two. But the over-2-cubic-foot fee stacks on top of any other applicable surcharge.
Dimension non-compliance: If you submit inaccurate dimensions and underpay for dimensional weight, USPS assesses a non-compliance fee. Declare accurate dimensions on every shipment.
USPS Ground Advantage vs. Priority Mail: which should you use?
Ground Advantage and Priority Mail are the two standard domestic USPS options for most e-commerce merchants. The choice comes down to speed and cost:
| Ground Advantage | Priority Mail | |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery time | 2–5 business days | 1–3 business days |
| Starting retail rate | $7.90 | Higher (zone/weight dependent) |
| Free USPS boxes | No—bring your own | Yes |
| Flat Rate option | No | Yes |
| Insurance included | $100 | $100 |
| Tracking included | Yes | Yes |
| Max weight | 70 lbs | 70 lbs |
| Best for | Cost-sensitive, non-urgent shipments | Time-sensitive shipments |
For anything that doesn't need to arrive in two days, Ground Advantage is almost always the cheaper call—particularly for lightweight packages or shipments that don't cross many zones. Priority Mail earns its place when customers expect faster delivery, or when a Priority Mail Flat Rate box undercuts Ground Advantage's zone-based rate for heavier packages traveling cross-country.
For a full breakdown, see USPS Ground Advantage vs. Priority Mail.
Can you ship hazardous materials with USPS Ground Advantage?
Ground Advantage is USPS's primary option for hazardous materials (HAZMAT) that can't travel by air, and in many cases the only one. It moves entirely by ground, so items restricted from air transport can go via Ground Advantage when they couldn't go any other USPS way.
Electronics with lithium batteries, alcohol-based products, aerosols, and certain paints and adhesives are all common categories that qualify.
Packaging requirements (effective Jan. 27, 2025): USPS requires rigid outer packaging meeting minimum strength standards:
- Packages 20 lbs and under: minimum ECT rating of 32, or burst strength of 200 lbs
- Packages over 20 lbs: minimum ECT rating of 44, or burst strength of 275 lbs
HAZMAT packages must be separated from non-HAZMAT packages and presented in a container marked "HAZMAT." Undeclared or improperly labeled HAZMAT incurs a $50 per-package non-compliance fee. For the complete list of permitted and prohibited items, consult USPS Publication 52.
How to ship USPS Ground Advantage with Shippo
Shippo gives merchants access to discounted USPS Ground Advantage commercial rates—lower than retail Post Office pricing—from the first shipment. No volume minimums, no carrier contracts required.
Web app users:
- Create or log in to your Shippo account.
- Enter your shipment details (weight, dimensions, origin, destination).
- Ground Advantage will appear in the carrier rate comparison automatically.
- Select it and purchase the label.
API users: Use the service level token usps_ground_advantage in your Shipments endpoint to get Ground Advantage rates and generate labels. The legacy tokens usps_first and usps_parcel_select were deprecated after July 2023 and are no longer supported—any integration still referencing them should be updated.
Shippo also supports Ground Advantage cubic pricing, which prices by package dimensions rather than weight. It can cut costs substantially on small, dense products. See USPS cubic pricing: how to qualify and save for the details.
What's changing for USPS Ground Advantage in 2026?
Three rounds of USPS pricing changes have landed or are landing in 2026—all stacking on each other.
January 18, 2026: Standard annual rate increase of approximately 7.8% across Ground Advantage.
April 26, 2026: A “temporary” 8% surcharge on Ground Advantage and other competitive products, running through Jan. 17, 2027. Packages under one pound saw average increases of 12.2% from this surcharge alone.
July 12, 2026—commercial rate restructuring (the biggest change yet):
- Sub-pound tier elimination: USPS is eliminating the 4-oz and 8-oz commercial pricing tiers. All packages under one pound will be billed at the current 12–15.99 oz rate, regardless of actual weight.
- Dimension rounding change: Package dimensions will round up to the next whole inch (rather than standard rounding) before DIM weight is calculated.
- DIM divisor reduction: For packages over one cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), the DIM divisor drops from 166 to 139—roughly a 16% reduction that pushes billable weights higher on large packages.
According to Supply Chain Dive, these July changes raise average Ground Advantage Commercial rates by 11.8%. Stack all three, and most commercial shippers are looking at Ground Advantage costs roughly 16% higher than a year ago.
Who feels it most: Merchants shipping lightweight packages (under 8 oz) and merchants shipping large, low-density parcels where dimensional weight already drives the rate. If either description fits your mix, run your current rates against the new structure before July 12.
