Squarespace shipping rates that match your real label costs

Selling physical products on Squarespace means making two shipping decisions: what to charge customers at checkout, and how to buy a label once each order comes in. If you ship anything heavier than a mailer, the safest setup is a flat or weight-based rate split into a nearby zone and a faraway one, since the same 5 lb box costs about $7 to ship from San Francisco to Los Angeles and about $14 to New York. Here's how to set up each option, what to charge so faraway orders don't eat your margin, and how to print labels without retyping every order.

Which Squarespace shipping option should you use?
Squarespace has three ways to charge for shipping, and you can make any of them free. It also offers local pickup and local delivery. Pick the option that matches how much your products vary in size and weight.
| Option | How it charges the customer | Works best for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat rate | A fee per order, a fee per item, or both | Products of similar size and weight, like prints or T-shirts |
| Weight-based | A price for each weight tier you set, based on the whole cart | Catalogs that range from light to heavy items |
| Carrier-calculated | A live FedEx, UPS or USPS quote at checkout | Heavy or bulky items where cost swings a lot by destination |
| Free shipping | A $0 rate, or a free shipping discount on orders over an amount you choose | Stores that build shipping into product prices |
Flat rate and weight-based options don't account for distance on their own. Limiting each one to the states you choose is how you charge more for faraway orders.
Squarespace says that in the U.S., carrier-calculated rates reflect retail pricing from FedEx, UPS, and USPS. If you buy your labels at discounted rates, your customers end up paying more for shipping than it costs you. Carrier-calculated shipping also needs a Core plan or higher and works for U.S. orders only.
How to set up shipping on Squarespace
You'll do most of this in the Shipping panel of your Squarespace dashboard, after a quick pass through your products.
- Add packed weights and dimensions to your products. Open a product, click Fulfillment, and under Weight and Dimensions click Add. Enter the weight and dimensions of each product (and each variant) packed and ready to ship, including the box and padding, because that's what the carrier charges for. Weight-based and carrier-calculated options both need these numbers.
- Open the Shipping panel and click Add Shipping Option. Choose Flat Rate, Weight-based or Carrier-calculated.
- Name the option the way customers will see it, such as "Standard shipping" or "Shipping to the East Coast".
- Enter your rates. For flat rate, set a Per Order Fee, a Per Item Fee, or both. For weight-based, add a price for each weight tier, then set the Orders over price for anything heavier than your last tier. Don't leave that last price at $0, or every heavy order ships free. For carrier-calculated, pick the services you want to offer, choose your boxes, and set a backup rate so checkout still works if a quote fails.
- Choose where the option applies. Under Select regions you will ship to, pick the states or countries this rate covers. To charge by distance, create one option for nearby states and a second, higher one that covers the remaining states.
- Add free shipping if you want it. For free shipping on orders over a set amount, create a free shipping discount in the Discounts panel with an Orders over minimum. Discounts need a Core plan or higher; on Basic, you can offer free shipping as a $0 flat rate.
- Check it at checkout. Add a product to your cart and enter a nearby address, then a faraway one, to see what customers will be charged.
If one product needs its own rates, such as an oversized item in a store of small ones, give it a separate fulfillment profile with its own shipping options.
What should you charge for shipping?
Start from what your labels actually cost, then build your checkout rates around those numbers. The table shows the lowest ground rate in Shippo for four typical Squarespace orders, sent from San Francisco to a nearby city and to the other side of the country.
| Package | To Los Angeles (USPS zone 4) | To New York (USPS zone 8) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 oz in a 12 × 10 × 1 in poly mailer | $5.82 | $6.34 |
| 2 lb in a 10 × 8 × 4 in box | $5.87 | $9.96 |
| 5 lb in a 12 × 12 × 8 in box | $7.03 | $14.27 |
| 10 lb in a 14 × 12 × 8 in box | $10.69 | $19.45 |
Shippo rates pulled Oct. 7, 2026, for packages shipped from ZIP 94103 (San Francisco, California) to ZIP 90024 (Los Angeles) and ZIP 10011 (New York) at the size and weight shown, lowest rate among USPS, UPS and FedEx ground services. USPS rates include its temporary holiday prices, which run until Jan. 17, 2027. Your rate will vary by origin, destination, weight and dimensions.
The light mailer costs almost the same everywhere, so one flat rate is fine if you sell prints or apparel. The 5 lb and 10 lb boxes cost close to twice as much to New York as to Los Angeles. If your average order weighs a few pounds, a single nationwide rate either overcharges your nearby customers or loses money on your faraway ones. Split it into two zones, with each rate set a little above your typical label cost in that zone.
Add these on top of the label:
- Packaging: boxes, mailers, tape and padding are part of your shipping cost. A poly mailer keeps soft goods in the cheapest weight bands.
- Box size: USPS charges by size instead of weight once a box is over 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), and UPS and FedEx can bill by size on any box. A right-sized box keeps you on the price you planned for.
- Peak season: UPS and FedEx add holiday surcharges through mid-January, so check your margin on heavier orders before you set a rate you'll keep all year.
You can check these rates for your own box and ZIP codes with a free Shippo account.
How to print shipping labels for Squarespace orders
Once orders come in, buy labels inside Squarespace or through a shipping app that syncs with your store.
Buy labels in Squarespace
On a Core plan or higher, USPS and UPS labels for U.S. orders are available right in your dashboard:
- Open the Orders panel and click a pending order.
- Click Purchase label.
- Choose your packaging and enter the packed weight and dimensions.
- Pick a service and a label format (4 × 6 in for a label printer or 8.5 × 11 in for a regular printer).
- Click Review order, then Confirm, then Print label.
- Mark the order as fulfilled so your customer gets Squarespace's shipping email with the tracking number.
This suits a handful of domestic orders. Squarespace's own help center lists the limits of its labels: one label at a time, one label per order, no FedEx, no international labels and no shipping insurance. You also can't use a UPS account you already have.
Use a shipping app connected to your store
A shipping app pays off once you ship more orders, sell on a second channel or send packages abroad. Shippo is one of the shipping extensions in the Squarespace Extensions marketplace. Here's the setup:
- Connect your store. In Shippo, go to Settings, then Stores, and click Squarespace, or connect from the Shippo extension in Squarespace. Your last 30 days of orders import right away, and new orders keep syncing after that.
- Compare rates. Each order shows discounted rates from 40+ carriers, including USPS, UPS, and FedEx, side by side with estimated delivery times.
- Buy labels in a batch. Select up to 100 orders on the Orders page and buy all the labels at once, with insurance, signature confirmation or a prepaid return label added where you need it.
- Ship abroad. International orders arrive with their customs items filled in from the order, and Shippo creates the customs declaration with the label, a step Squarespace doesn't handle.
Buying a label in Shippo marks the Squarespace order as fulfilled and adds the tracking number. Squarespace doesn't send its own shipping email for labels bought this way, so set up tracking emails in Shippo under Settings, then Tracking. They're included on every plan. If you also sell on Etsy or eBay, those orders land on the same Orders page, so you ship everything from one place. Shippo's Squarespace integration is free to start: you pay for the postage on each label, plus any extras you add and any carrier adjustments.
Squarespace shipping FAQ
How do I charge combined shipping for multiple items on Squarespace?
Use a flat rate with both fees. Set the Per Item Fee to what you want to charge for each additional item, and the Per Order Fee to your first-item price minus that amount. To charge $6 for the first item and $2 for each one after it, set a $4 per-order fee and a $2 per-item fee, which makes one item $6 and three items $10.
Can I offer international shipping on Squarespace?
Yes. Create a flat rate or weight-based option and choose the countries it covers, or select Rest of the World. Carrier-calculated rates and Squarespace's own labels are domestic only, and Squarespace doesn't add customs forms or tariff codes to orders. To ship abroad, buy the label through a shipping app like Shippo, which creates the customs declaration with the label. Shippo's international shipping rates comparison shows what each carrier charges.
Why does my Squarespace checkout say shipping is unavailable?
Usually no shipping option covers the customer's address. Check that at least one rate includes their state or country under Select regions you will ship to. With carrier-calculated shipping, the option also disappears if a product is missing its weight or dimensions, or if none of your boxes is big enough for the order, so a backup rate is worth setting.
Create a free Shippo account and connect your Squarespace store to ship your next order from one screen.
