GLS US Shipping Guide: How E-commerce Businesses In The Western U.S. Can Ship Better

GLS-US is the largest West Coast regional carrier servicing 9 western US states in over 4,300 zip codes. What separates GLS-US from many of its competitors today is our chain of custody.

Within the 9 western states, GLS handles the first-mile, middle-mile, and last-mile delivery, which allows for much more control and visibility from dock to door.

GLS specializes in both direct-to-consumer and business-to-business deliveries within an array of industries in 1-3 days! Ground transit is often at least 1 day faster than the competition for deliveries going farther than 150 miles.

GLS US Shipping For E-commerce Businesses At a Glance

For e-commerce businesses that are operating in the western half of the U.S., GLS US makes a handful of very compelling reasons to use them. Some of the top ways GLS US helps e-commerce businesses grow are the following:

Small Haul Pricing

Get a more exact cost of shipping when you’re delivering packages short distances to super-dense urban areas.

For example, let’s say your fulfillment operations are located a little outside of Los Angeles, CA and you’re trying to deliver packages to people inside the city. Rather than paying a Zone 1 rate that includes shipping up to 150 miles, you’d instead pay only for the distance your package was sent.

This is something national carriers do not currently offer, making this one of the most competitive ground pricing options available. On average, GLS saves customers at least 10% in overall savings.

Expedited Shipping

Because GLS US is a regional carrier, they don’t have to travel as long to deliver packages. Their ground service can deliver to customers in 1-3 business days. However, if your customers need their orders sooner, GLS US offers several overnight options so they can get their orders within the hour most convenient to them. Saturday delivery can also be an option for certain zip codes.

This gives your e-commerce business not only the chance to meet customer demands and expectations but the chance to exceed them. Check out GLS US’s Time-in-transit Maps to see how much faster your packages can be delivered!

Package Tracking

With customers checking order tracking pages 3.5 times per order on every order, it’s important to keep them in the know to say the least. With GLS US you’ll be getting end-to-end visibility with a photo upon delivery for maximum confirmation. This protects your business from the threat of porch pirates and assures your customers of receiving their orders.

Flexible Pickup and Accessible Drop-Offs

Once your orders have been packaged and ready to ship, you’ll find no shortage of drop-off locations. There are hundreds of drop-boxes strategically located throughout the states in which GLS US operates in so you likely won’t have to travel far to find one near you. You can use their Drop-Box locator to find ones that work for your business.

But, as a business owner, you may find yourself too busy to stop by a drop-box or have too many orders to ship that would fit in a drop box. In those cases, GLS offers flexible pick up options. You can have scheduled pickups if you have a steady stream of orders that need to be shipped. You can have future dates locked in for when you know you’ll be too busy. You’ll even have Same Day on-call pickups, though the cut off time is 1 p.m. and might be earlier in rural areas.

Latest Technology

GLS US uses the latest technology to ensure that your e-commerce business doesn’t miss a step when it comes to shipping. Creating an account for your business and working with a multi-carrier shipping software like Shippo is quick and easy and shouldn’t interrupt your current workflows.

GLS US Shipping Services Supported On Shippo

Ground service provides delivery by 5 p.m. the next business day and 6 p.m. for more rural areas. For shipments with transit times of two or more days, we will deliver your shipment by 5 p.m. on the day of delivery.

Priority Delivery Service (PDS) service provides morning delivery of your packages by 10:30 a.m. the next business day to most areas.* For shipments with transit times of two or more days, we will deliver your shipment by 10:30 a.m. on the day of delivery.

Saturday Delivery Service (SDS) provides for Saturday delivery to most areas by 10:30am. Saturday delivery service may not be available to areas with transit times of two or more days.

GLS US Shipping Costs

When looking at shipping costs, there is no one size fits all approach with GLS US. They will instead provide you with a customized rate structure that will ensure they are always competitive and, at times, less than national carriers in certain scenarios.

GLS US offers fewer surcharges than the national average and also does not assess dimensional weight when the product is less than 3 cubic feet. This is an added benefit to merchants who sell smaller products, such as apparel sellers.

On top of that, GLS customers can order complimentary GLS supplies via their customer portal, including a Priority Envelope (9.5 inches x 12.15 inches) made of cardboard and a Priority Pak (12.5 inches x 16 inches) made of plastic.

Rules For Shipping With GLS US

GLS US is one of the more lax options for e-commerce shipping. For example, GLS US will ship commodities that other carriers won’t, such as vape products and alcoholic products. They are also generous in the types of products they allow in their network, but if you’re unsure, contact GLS and ask.

The primary rule to remember is that packages can only weigh up to 150 lbs so be sure that you measure your packages correctly.

How Ship with GLS US Through Shippo

There are two ways in which you can ship with GLS US through Shippo. In both scenarios, you must first make an account with GLS US. To do so, you’ll have to contact GLS US directly and from there, they will assess your business and provide you with your custom shipping rates. Once that happens, you’ll be assigned an account number.

For merchants using the Shippo Webapp, you’ll have to simply navigate to settings, click carriers on the left-hand column, and then click connect carrier account at the top right of your screen. Once there, click on GLS US, add your carrier account number, and click connect carrier. The rates you and GLS agreed to when creating your account will then appear as possible options when generating your next label.

For Shippo API users, there will be a bit more of a technical process required, but still easily doable. Our API docs provide insight into the process, but our friendly sales team or your customer success manager would also be able walk you through the process as well.
