For large but lightweight packages, consider UPS Ground dimensional weight
A package can be light on the scale but still take up substantial space in a delivery vehicle. To account for that space, UPS may calculate a dimensional weight from the exterior length, width, and height of the packed box.
UPS compares the package's actual scale weight with its dimensional weight. The higher value generally becomes the billable weight used to calculate the UPS Ground rate.
For example, a large box containing a lightweight product may be rated at a higher weight than the number shown on the scale. The applicable divisor and rating rules depend on the UPS rate type and current carrier terms, so the Shippo calculator should be used for the exact shipment.
How to reduce dimensional-weight charges
- Use the smallest box that safely fits the item and protective material.
- Remove unnecessary empty space before measuring the package.
- Measure the exterior of the fully packed box, not the product itself.
- Compare UPS Ground with other available services for the same shipment.

Additional size rules and surcharges may apply before the maximum is reached.
