WooCommerce shipping labels: what USPS, UPS and FedEx cost

Every WooCommerce order you ship needs a USPS, UPS or FedEx label, and WooCommerce doesn't sell those labels on its own. A ground label for a small order shipped across the country costs about $6 to $11, and about $10 to $15 for a 2 lb box.

This guide shows real rates for five typical WooCommerce orders, how to buy and print labels without retyping each order on a carrier website, and how to keep the cost down, starting with the box you pick.

What USPS, UPS and FedEx labels cost for WooCommerce orders

For the orders most WooCommerce stores ship, the lowest ground label from each carrier ran from about $6 for a small package to about $28 for a light but bulky box on a cross-country route. The table shows each carrier's lowest-priced ground or economy service for five typical orders.

Order (weight, box size)USPS Ground AdvantageUPS Ground SaverFedEx Ground Economy
Jewelry or accessory (8 oz, 9×6×2 in)$6.34$6.23$10.72
Candle or cosmetics (2 lb, 10×8×4 in)$10.15$9.70$15.32
Clothing bundle (5 lb, 12×10×6 in)$14.27$14.15$20.59
Pillow or lampshade (2 lb, 16×12×10 in)$26.10$21.52$27.60
Small appliance (10 lb, 14×12×10 in)$20.98$19.45$26.56

Shippo commercial rates pulled Sept. 30, 2026, for packages shipped from ZIP 94103 (San Francisco) to a residential street address in ZIP 11211 (Brooklyn, New York), at the weight and box size shown in each row. Estimated transit on this route was five days for USPS Ground Advantage and UPS Ground Saver and six days for FedEx Ground Economy. USPS rates were pulled before its temporary holiday prices took effect on Oct. 4. Your rate will vary by origin, destination, weight and dimensions.

The biggest jump in every column comes from box size. The 2 lb pillow in a 16×12×10 in box cost more to ship than the 10 lb appliance with all three services, because carriers bill a large, light box by its volume instead of its weight (more on that below). The carrier with the lowest rate also changes with the route and the service you need, so compare live rates at the time you buy each label.

You can compare these rates for your own packages with a free Shippo account.

Is it cheaper than buying labels at the post office?

Buying labels online is usually cheaper than buying them at a counter. USPS sells postage at two price tiers. For Ground Advantage, USPS offers Commercial prices when you pay through approved PC Postage products, qualifying postage meters or a permit imprint, and postage bought any other way, including at a Post Office counter, is charged Retail prices. Shippo's USPS rates are discounted from retail.

UPS and FedEx also price retail and account shipments differently. UPS has separate Daily and Retail rate types and uses a different dimensional weight divisor for each. Shippo's UPS rates are discounted and don't require a UPS account of your own. Shippo's FedEx discounts apply to FedEx Ground Economy and FedEx International Connect Plus.

Printing at home also means no wait at the counter, since you can drop packages at a carrier location or schedule a pickup.

How to buy and print labels for WooCommerce orders

WooCommerce doesn't buy carrier labels on its own, so stores add one of three routes.

The first route is WooCommerce Shipping, a free extension from WooCommerce. It buys USPS, UPS, DHL Express and select FedEx labels from the order screen, for US-based stores that sell in U.S. dollars. WooCommerce lists bulk label purchasing as still in development, so each label is bought order by order.

The second route is the carrier's own website. WooCommerce's UPS Shipping Method and FedEx Shipping Method extensions calculate live rates at checkout but don't print labels, and their documentation points you to a label tool instead. With that route, each address gets typed into UPS.com or FedEx.com by hand, and each tracking number gets pasted back into WooCommerce.

A multi-carrier shipping platform is the third option. Shippo imports new orders from your WooCommerce store as often as every 15 minutes and shows rates from 40+ carriers, including USPS, UPS and FedEx, for each order.

Here's how the Shippo route works for a WooCommerce store:

  1. Connect your store from Settings > Stores > WooCommerce in Shippo. Your store must be live to connect.
  2. Check that your products have weights and dimensions on each product's Shipping tab in WooCommerce, using the size of the box you ship in. You can also save package templates in Shippo for the boxes you use most.
  3. Open the Orders page, select one order or up to 100 at once, compare rates and buy the labels.
  4. Print on 4×6 in thermal labels or 8.5×11 in paper. The Shippo Print desktop app sends labels straight to your printer.
  5. Ship. Shippo updates the order's fulfillment status in WooCommerce and adds the tracking number to the order notes.

Once configured, automation rules can assign a package or service level by SKU, weight or destination, so repeat orders are ready to buy. Store connections, including the WooCommerce integration, are unlimited on every plan, and the free Starter plan covers up to 30 labels a month.

Why a light box can cost more than a heavy one

A light box costs more when the carrier bills it by dimensional weight, a weight calculated from the box's size. You pay for whichever is higher: the actual weight or the dimensional weight.

USPS applies dimensional weight to parcels larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). Since July 12, 2026, it divides length × width × height by 139 and rounds up to the next pound. FedEx and UPS daily rates also divide by 139, without the USPS 1 cubic foot threshold.

In the rate table, the pillow's 16×12×10 in box is 1,920 cubic inches, which works out to a billed weight of 14 lb for a 2 lb item. The appliance box, at 14×12×10 in, is 1,680 cubic inches, just under 1 cubic foot, so USPS charged its actual 10 lb. By the UPS and FedEx formula, the appliance box bills at 13 lb and the pillow box at 14 lb, so the pillow still costs more despite weighing 8 lb less.

Use the smallest box that protects the item, and move soft goods like clothing into poly mailers. When you measure, round each side up to the next whole inch, which is what USPS does, so the rate you see matches the package the carrier measures.

How distance and delivery speed change the price

Carriers also price by zone. USPS zones run from 1 to 9 based on the distance between the origin and destination ZIP codes, and you can look up your own in the USPS zone charts. Faster services cost a multiple of the ground price.

Service (2 lb, 10×8×4 in box)San Francisco to West Hollywood, CA (90069)San Francisco to Brooklyn, NY (11211)
USPS Ground Advantage$6.03$10.15
USPS Priority Mail$9.56$13.70
USPS Priority Mail Express$43.91$63.94
UPS Ground$7.82$10.41
UPS 2nd Day Air$13.32$15.17
UPS Next Day Air Saver$37.35$50.41
FedEx Home Delivery$14.00$22.69
FedEx 2Day$23.20$31.49
FedEx Standard Overnight$41.54$55.33

Shippo commercial rates pulled Sept. 30, 2026, from ZIP 94103 to residential street addresses in ZIP 90069 and ZIP 11211, for a 2 lb package in a 10×8×4 in box. USPS rates predate the Oct. 4 holiday prices. Your rate will vary by origin, destination, weight and dimensions.

The cross-country route added $1.85 to $20.03 depending on the service, and overnight delivery cost about two to seven times the ground price on the same route.

On the short route, USPS Ground Advantage, UPS Ground and FedEx Home Delivery were all estimated at two days, the same as UPS 2nd Day Air, so ground is often fast enough for customers within a few hundred miles of you.

Surcharges and adjustments after you print

The price on the label can still change after you ship. UPS and FedEx add surcharges for things like residential delivery, remote delivery areas, fuel and packages that need extra handling. Fuel is a percentage that moves weekly with diesel and jet fuel prices.

Carriers re-measure and re-weigh packages in their networks. USPS uses automated package verification to find labels that were underpaid and collects the difference, and UPS and FedEx correct charges when the audited weight or size is higher than what you entered. Since July 12, 2026, USPS also requires accurate dimensions on commercial parcels and charges a fee when they're missing or wrong on parcels over 1 cubic foot or 22 in long.

In Shippo, these carrier adjustments appear on the Billing page, most often 30 to 60 days after the package ships. Weighing the packed box and entering real dimensions helps you avoid weight and size adjustments, and Shippo validates US addresses on every plan before you pay.

Holiday shipping prices in 2026

Label prices rise for the holiday season. USPS temporary prices for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select run from Oct. 4, 2026, through Jan. 17, 2027. FedEx demand surcharges began Sept. 28 and step up on Nov. 23. UPS demand surcharges on Ground Residential, Ground Saver and Air packages run Oct. 25, 2026, through Jan. 16, 2027, with a higher step from Nov. 22 to Dec. 26, and UPS surcharges on packages that need additional handling started Sept. 27. Our 2026 holiday surcharge guide breaks down the USPS and FedEx amounts by service and weight.

WooCommerce shipping label FAQ

Can WooCommerce print shipping labels without an extension?

No. WooCommerce handles checkout shipping options like flat rates and zones, but buying and printing a carrier label takes an extension such as WooCommerce Shipping or a connected shipping platform.

Can I get a refund on a label I didn't use?

Yes, if the package never shipped. In Shippo, request the refund within 90 days of buying the label, and it's processed within 14 business days. Don't use a label after you've requested a refund for it.

Can UPS or FedEx deliver to a PO box?

Some services can. UPS Ground Saver can deliver to US PO boxes because eligible packages may be handed to USPS for final delivery. Check the rules of the service you pick before you buy a label for a PO box address.

Why does my label cost more than my customer paid for shipping?

The shipping you charge at checkout and the label you buy are priced separately. If a flat rate doesn't account for box size or distance, a bulky or far-away order can cost more than the customer paid. Comparing your label costs against your WooCommerce shipping methods shows where the gap is.
