USPS introduces industry-wide 8% fuel surcharge: what shippers need to know

USPS has announced an industry-wide fuel surcharge that may impact your shipping costs in the coming months. Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s changing and what it means for your business.

What’s changing?

Starting April 26, 2026, USPS will introduce an industry-wide 8% fuel surcharge on select services. This surcharge is designed to help offset rising transportation costs. The surcharge is temporary and is scheduled to go into effect on April 26, 2026 and remain until midnight Central Time on January 17, 2027.

For full details, you can review USPS’s official industry alert.

Which services are affected?

The 8% surcharge applies to the following USPS services:

  • Priority Mail Express
  • Priority Mail
  • USPS Ground Advantage
  • Parcel Select

What this means for shippers

If you use USPS, you may notice slightly higher rates for these services during this period. The surcharge will be built into the rates you see when purchasing labels, so there’s no additional action required, but it may impact your overall shipping spend.
