What is an MCP and how does it help with shipping?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI agents connect to external tools and services. Think of it like USB-C: instead of every device needing its own cable, one standard connector works everywhere. MCP does the same thing for AI. Instead of every app building a custom integration with every AI tool, one standard connection works across Claude, ChatGPT, and any other MCP-compatible agent.

For shipping, that means your AI agent can now take real action inside your Shippo account. Not just tell you what to do, but actually do it, including buying a label, validating an address, and pulling your carrier spend for the month. All from a conversation.

The Shippo MCP launched in December 2025 as a self-hosted, developer-configured product. This release is different: it's a hosted MCP you can install with one click directly from Claude or ChatGPT, with no technical setup required.

The Shippo MCP lets you handle shipping tasks, including buying labels, comparing rates, and checking on late orders, just by asking your AI agent of choice in plain English.

Want to automate the whole thing? Here's an example of what a daily workflow looks like:

Your orders, discounted rates, and shipment history are already in Shippo. Connect once and your AI agent has access to all of it, so you don’t need to open the Shippo web app. Anything you do through ChatGPT or Claude shows up in your Shippo account, just like normal.

Yes. The Shippo MCP works with any MCP-compatible AI agent or framework. Connect via mcp.shippo.com and authenticate via OAuth. Shippo is also listed on Smithery, Glama, and ClawHub.

Do I need a Shippo account to use the Shippo MCP?
