What is USPS Priority Mail

USPS Priority Mail is the Postal Service's faster domestic service for packages that should arrive in a few days.

You can price a Priority Mail package three ways: by weight and zone, with Flat Rate boxes and envelopes, or with Cubic pricing for small, heavy packages. The cheapest option depends on the package, so it pays to compare.

USPS doesn't add fuel, residential or Saturday delivery surcharges to Priority Mail, and free boxes are available from USPS.

How much does USPS Priority Mail cost?

The rate depends on the package, the route and the pricing option you choose. There's no single Priority Mail price for every shipment.

Shipping zone

USPS zones 1–9 measure the distance between origin and destination ZIP codes.

Weight

Weight-based pricing goes by the pound, up to the 70 lb maximum.

Package size

Cubic pricing uses box volume, and large boxes can be billed at dimensional weight.

Pricing option

Flat Rate charges one price per box to any zone, regardless of weight.

For large but lightweight packages, consider USPS Priority Mail dimensional weight

USPS applies dimensional weight to Priority Mail packages larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). A large box with a light item inside can cost more than its actual weight suggests.

Since July 12, 2026, USPS rounds each side up to the next whole inch, multiplies length × width × height and divides by 139 (previously 166). If that result is higher than the actual weight, it becomes the billable weight.

For example, a 12 × 12 × 14 inch box has 2,016 cubic inches. Divided by 139, that rounds up to a dimensional weight of 15 lb. If the packed box weighs 4 lb, you pay the 15 lb rate.

How to reduce dimensional-weight charges

  • Use the smallest box that fits the item and its protective packaging.
  • Price small, heavy items with Cubic, which charges by box size up to 20 lb.
  • Try a Flat Rate box when a dense item fits inside one.
  • Measure the packed box at its outer edges before you buy the label.
Shippo shows weight-based, Cubic and Flat Rate prices side by side when the package qualifies, so you can pick the lowest before you ship.
