The Cookie Countess is the brainchild of cookie connoisseur and decorator, Hillary Ramos. 

What started out as a creative outlet in 2013 when she stenciled her first cookie, has blossomed into a successful online business offering high-quality decorating tools and supplies, including innovative items such as The Cookie Countess Airbrush System, The Cookie Countess Precision Rolling Pin, and more—all for creating expertly designed cookies, cakes, cupcakes, macrons, and beyond.

Based in Warwick, Rhode Island, Hillary and her husband Jon (“The Cookie Count”), oversee a busy e-commerce site and offer a monthly subscription service, The Cookie Subscription Prescription, which includes fun decorating projects for all ages.

The Challenge:

The Cookie Countess is a complex business. The company manages both a regular e-commerce store and a subscription business, each with separate processes, customers, and workflows. Though based in the US, The Cookie Countess is a business with customers all around the world. For every country they service, they are faced with different shipping costs, services, and customs paperwork.

And while shipping may vary from one country to the next, one thing that remains consistent, no matter where you go, is an expectation for speed. In the words of Jon Ramos, “We needed a fast way to ship orders.” 

To keep up with the demands of international e-commerce, The Cookie Countess needed:

  • The ability to support multiple different shipping workflows and make sure they’re in sync with their Shopify store

The Cookie Countess evaluated multiple shipping platforms to help handle the complexities of their growing operations. “There are lots of shipping platforms out there that link with Shopify, but many are cumbersome and take too long to process the labels,” said Jon.

When comparing tools, Jon looked at their abilities to print labels in bulk, the size of their carrier networks and their ability to provide the best, discounted rates, how well they integrated with Shopify, and how flexible they were for his multiple lines of business. Ultimately, Jon and his team chose Shippo because they found it to be the most complete tool for Shopify shipping, while also being easy to use, and fast to deploy.

The Results:

With Shippo powering their shipping operations, The Cookie Countess significantly increased the speed of order fulfillment, gained the ability to compare several carriers and service levels on a per-order basis, scaled their international customer-base, and did it all without any integration work or changes to the rest of their tech stack. 

The Easiest Integration Ever

The Cookie Countess runs its business on Shopify. More specifically, they’re on Shopify’s enterprise-grade Plus program. They did not have the time or resources to oversee a long and technical integration. With Shippo, the entire integration and setup process took just a couple of minutes.

All that was required was to enter their Shopify account into the Shippo admin. Immediately after, all of their orders started importing automatically into Shippo. And that’s not all, Shippo also syncs information back to their Shopify account. Every time an order is fulfilled in Shippo, the order’s fulfillment status and tracking info automatically syncs back to Shopify in real-time, ensuring that there are no discrepancies between tools.

“We have some of our package types auto-loaded into Shippo’s ‘Saved Package’ section to make it easy to choose the most frequently used boxes without having to key them in every time,” says Jon. Automating repetitive tasks is just one Shippo feature that helps businesses maximize productivity. “We also print our [shipping] labels directly to a thermal printer and can process a label from start to finish in less than 40 seconds,” adds Jon.  “If you’re under the gun and need to ship a ton of different sizes and weights, we have not found a faster way to do so than with Shippo.” Another big plus for Jon and his team is Shippo’s versatility: “Multiple employees can all be shipping on the same account, at the same time,” he concludes. 

Ensuring The Best Rates By Optimizing Across Several Carriers And Accounts Automatically

For every single order that The Cookie Countess receives, they use Shippo to automatically identify the best shipping rate from multiple carriers. “We use Shippo’s discounted UPS and DHL Express rates (which are surprisingly good) and we have our own carrier accounts that also appear in our buy label rates,” says Jon. Having the ability to view Shippo’s discounted rates alongside their own carrier accounts in one convenient view has also saved The Cookie Countess a lot of extra effort. “Having multiple carriers all quoting on the same page makes it easy to choose the lowest rate,” he adds. 

“We have seen steady growth in our company for the past seven years, and although we have tried other shipping platforms in the past, we keep coming back to Shippo as our go-to label-creation partner,” concludes Jon.
